Looking for the perfect small sport coupe to get around Turnersville, Cherry Hill, or Mount Laurel? While a niche market, the small sports coupe has some dedicated fans. These vehicles can be a great way to get the feel of driving a sports car without spending the large amount of money that you would on a full-size sports car.
Let's take a look at two of the leaders in the segment, the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S. We're putting these two head to head on paper instead of the road!
What's New for the 2016 BRZ?
The Subaru BRZ has only some minor changes for 2016. An upgraded infotainment system is paired with a rearview camera and made standard on all trim levels. There's also a limited edition HyperBlue version with some special exterior and interior designs.
The Scion FR-S also has received minor changes in 2016. A brand new 7-inch touchscreen has been added to the interior, while a rearview camera is standard on all models.
BRZ vs. FR-S Trim Levels and Powertrain
The 2016 Subaru BRZ seats four and comes in two primary trim levels: Premium and Limited. As was previously mentioned, there's also a HyperBlue edition for 2016.
The Subaru BRZ is a rear-wheel drive car powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This powerhouse can generate up to 151 lb-ft of torque and 200 horsepower. It comes paired with a six-speed manual transmission standard, but it can be upgraded to an automatic with rev-matched downshifts and easy-to-use paddle shifters.
Driving tests have clocked the BRZ going from zero to 60 in only 6.8 seconds with the manual transmission; the automatic is a bit slower at 7.9 seconds. EPA estimates have the BRZ getting 25 combined mpg for the manual transmission and 28 mpg for the automatic.
The Scion FR-S is a two-door sport coupe with 2+2 seating. It comes in only one trim level, and all factory options are dealer installed, not factory installed.
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that can put out 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque powers the FR-S. It's paired with a standard six-speed transmission or you can upgrade to an automatic.
The FR-S can go from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds with the manual transmission. The EPA estimates that the FR-S will get 25 combined mpg with the manual and 28 mpg with the automatic.
