
Think back to when you were a child. There wasn’t anything more magical than getting lost in a good children’s book. However, with the increased dependency in electronics, it seems some of the best literary works have been pushed away in your life, but that doesn’t have to be the case for your children. This year show your kids the magic of literature for International Children’s Book Day, and take some time to appreciate these four New Jersey authors.
Lauren T. Barnes
Lauren T. Barnes of Hunterdon County, NJ is best known for her award-winning Barnesyard Books series. It follows farm animals Elston, Ernest and Twist. Their adventures take place on the Barnesyard Farm, an actual farm for homeless animals with serene green pastures. Her stories are heartwarming and help kids understand acceptance, devotion, persistence and love. Best of all, they work to help children understand the importance of being themselves.

Robert J. Blake
Springfield, NJ’s Robert J. Blake is a renowned author who’s not only famous for his stories, but his visually captivating illustrations as well. He started drawing as a child and continued to do so while creating some of great children’s books. His literary works include Akiak, Painter and Ugly and Little Devils. Each one is meant to provide a new feeling, whether it be an emotion or point of view on things readers might not have experienced otherwise.
Judy Blume
The famous Judy Blume has been a part of children’s book collections for years, and many are unaware that she grew up right in Elizabeth, NJ. She’s best known for her works in children and young adult literature, most of which is set in the lovely Garden State. These include Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret; Then Again, Maybe I Won’t; and Forever. In addition, many of her teen novels aim to tackle many of today’s modern social issues teens can deal with such as racism, sexuality and divorce. She’s also been awarded the Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association.

Daryl Cobb
Daryl Cobb of Hampton, NJ, has written 17 books for children including Mr. Moon and Baseball, Bullies & Angels. The latter was awarded a Mom’s Choice Award in 2014. However, he’s more than just an author. He’s also an educational presenter for students in kindergarten to 8th grade. He offers a variety of assembly programs that promote literacy through creative arts. One of which is called “A Writer’s Journey.” This is available for grades 2 to 8, and it’s an interactive event that helps kids get discovery their literary talents and create their own stories.
Your kids deserve to experience the magic you felt when reading a book as a child. You can elp them enjoy literature as much as you did at that age and introduce them to some works by these four New Jersey authors on International Children’s Book Day. These stories will be something they’ll remember and learn from for years to come.
