To you, summer means it’s time for vacations, shore trips and ultimate relaxation. But for your Subaru, the season means heat-related performance and mechanical issues. So you need to make sure your car is in perfect health throughout the entire season in Turnersville, Mount Laurel and Cherry Hill. And to help you do just that, Prestige Subaru is here with your guide on how to care for your Subaru during the hot summer.

Check & Replace Fluids Regularly

Your engine is the biggest part affected by the hot summer temperatures. The warmer the climate, the more likely it is to overheat. The engine oil and coolant in your Subaru help to prevent that, but only if they’re at sufficient levels, so check these fluids regularly.

To check your oil, take the dipstick out of the tank under the hood, wipe it clean and dip it back into the tank. If the fluid falls below the bottom circle, then you need to schedule an oil change. To check your coolant, simply look at the coolant reservoir under the hood (check your owner’s manual for its exact position). The fluid should be around the middle of the minimum and maximum markings. If you need to add more, just remove the radiator pressure cap and pour some in.

Keep an Eye on Tire Pressure

Hot weather causes the air in your tires to expand leading to overinflated tires. Overinflated tires can cause reduced traction, decreased fuel economy and tire blowouts, especially while driving at highways speeds. With that said, you want to make sure you check your tire pressure throughout the summer. You can find the appropriate tire air pressure for your Subaru on the side of the driver’s door and the owner’s manual. Just use a tire gauge to measure and deflate or inflate as needed.

Keep Your A/C Running Well

With a history of hot and humid summers, vehicle air conditioning is a must in South Jersey. The best way to ensure a proper functioning system is to be aware of any issues and have them repaired immediately. If the system is taking more than a few seconds to blow cold air or you hear or smell something unusual coming from the vents, schedule a service appointment. Plus, be sure to have your cabin air filter replaced every couple of months to keep allergy-inducing particles and other pollutants out.

Protect the Paint & Cool the Interior

Just as your skin can be damaged by the sun, your car’s exterior can suffer as well. Hot summer days can cause serious cosmetic damage. To avoid this, try parking in a garage or shaded areas when possible. You can also apply special UV protectant waxes to prevent sun damage and discoloration.

The high temperatures can also lead to a dangerously hot interior especially during those South Jersey heat waves. Parking in shaded area can help but if you really want to make sure your interior is safe from the sun, invest in a sun shade and place it on your windshield. This will prevent the interior from being damaged from the sun and keep everything inside cool.
