Boredom and cliché have often accompanied midsize sedan shoppers through the years, and for good reason. This car model is often not a particularly inspired one, and usually only small families on a budget give it a second thought-let alone a test drive.

The 2016 Subaru Legacy and 2016 Mazda6, however, are two new vehicles looking to tear up the market this year and redefine their midsize sedan concept. Of the two, the Subaru Legacy gets the slight nod over its Mazda6 competitor, though to be fair, you can't really go wrong with either one of these sleek new designs on the streets of Turnersville, Cherry Hill, or Mount Laurel.

Subaru Legacy vs. Mazda6 Exterior

Both the Subaru Legacy and the Mazda6 boast designs that make them at once pleasing to the eye and perfect fits for small families on the road. The Mazda6, in particular, is one of the more attractive cars in its class, with a muscular front and face, an arched roofline, and a detailed backend with classy taillights.

For those looking for a simpler, less obtrusive design, however, the 2016 Subaru Legacy might be a better fit. It's a no-nonsense vehicle that lacks the design flourishes that could make the Mazda6 a tad too flashy in the eyes of some. Instead, the Legacy is a more conservative model that leans on a fine and contoured look.

Interior of the Subaru Legacy and Mazda6

If there's a knock on the Mazda6, it's that the exterior suggests an equally bold interior. In actuality, you may be a little disappointed after getting in the car. The Mazda6 has always suffered from a relatively drab interior, and while this is alleviated somewhat with new trim accents and a well-placed infotainment console, the interior is still a little bit of a letdown.

The Subaru Legacy, on the other hand, matches its functional exterior look with an equally pragmatic interior design centered on an LCD display and touchscreen interface, producing a look that's overall both handsome and clean.

Under the Hood

Unsurprisingly enough, the 2016 Subaru Legacy and the Mazda6 continue to battle each other to a stalemate when it comes to engine power. Of the two, the Mazda6 does have the slightly stronger engine. With a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV inline-4, the Mazda6 is capable of producing up to 184 horsepower with 185 lb-ft of torque. All versions have front-wheel drive and can be outfitted with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The drawback here is that the Mazda6 isn't exactly the quietest drive out there, and to really make use of the horsepower, you'll have to pound the pedal hard.

The Subaru Legacy, by comparison, comes with a 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder engine that can produce 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, and it also includes all-wheel drive and continuously variable automatic transmission. The result is a drive that may not be as powerful as its Mazda counterpart but is definitely quieter and much smoother.

Test Driving the 2016 Subaru Legacy

You can't really go wrong with either vehicle in this situation, but if you're looking for a comfortable and quiet ride with a handsome and understated design, the 2016 Subaru Legacy is the right car for you.
