A midsize SUV like the Subaru Outback or Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a great all-around option for everyone from commuters to families. So, which one is right for you?

To help drivers in Turnersville, Cherry Hill, and Mount Laurel decide, Prestige Subaru put together this Subaru Outback vs. Hyundai Santa Fe Sport comparison.

Subaru Outback vs Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Performance

The Subaru Outback has standard all-wheel drive and offers a choice between two efficient and capable engines.

The base powertrain is a 2.5L 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that gets up to 175 horsepower. The second is a 3.6L 6-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine that can produce up to 256 horsepower.

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport also offers two engines, but they can't provide as much power. The largest one is just a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that gets only 235 horsepower.

The Outback manages these engines with either a Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) or High-Torque CVT. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport runs on an eight-speed automatic transmission that doesn't shift as quickly or precisely.

The CVT also assists with your fuel economy and helps the Outback get up to an EPA-estimated 25 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport isn't quite as efficient. It gets an EPA-estimated 22 MPG city and 29 MPG highway.

Subaru Outback vs Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Safety

With eight standard airbags and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the Subaru Outback keeps you safe and in control. It's also loaded with driver assistance features to help prevent accidents. The EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology package comes standard and gives you greater awareness with features like:

  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management

While the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport offers similar technology, it doesn't bundle these features together into one system like EyeSight®. It also doesn't protect you as well during an accident with only six airbags.

Subaru Outback vs Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Infotainment System

Both the Subaru Outback and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport offer an infotainment system to enhance your drive. Inside each SUV you'll find an eight-inch screen on your dashboard that's equipped with HD Radio™ and SiriusXM® Satellite Radio.

The system in both vehicles is Bluetooth®-compatible, so you can stream music, access apps through Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, and send and receive both calls and messages without taking your hands off the wheel.

While the Outback makes the eight-inch screen available on lower trim levels, the Hyundai Santa Fe only offers a seven-inch screen until the top trim level. It also doesn't provide you with a standard navigation system until the top trim level either.
