Subaru has been on the quest for a “zero landfill” way of life for quite some time, becoming the first auto manufacturer in U.S. history to become “Zero Landfill” in 2004, now all of Subaru’s manufacturing plants either recycle all waste or turn it into electricity—so nothing from the manufacturing of your 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or your 2016 Subaru Impreza is just sitting in a landfill polluting up our world. Now Subaru has announced a new initiative: Zero Landfill National Parks. Check out the video below for more information!

A recently conducted survey revealed that, while most Americans (59%) were not aware of the waste management issues currently facing national parks across the country, an overwhelming majority (84%) would be “willing to make a significant effort to reduce the amount of trash left in parks.” Additionally, Subaru and the National Parks Conservation recently wrapped up an deep waste characterization study that found most national park waste is brought from outside the park, and the culprits have been narrowed down to a small range of everyday items. The biggest offenders? Plastics like water bottles, plastic bags, non-recyclable or compostable food packaging, and paper coffee cups were identified as the main drivers of landfill waste and are of the biggest concern for national parks.

“As a longtime advocate for protecting the environment and a premier partner of the National Park Service Centennial, Subaru is more committed than ever to spreading awareness of these issues and making meaningful strides to keep our national treasures beautiful,” said Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “We hope these new studies shed light on the lack of awareness of this important issue, but also show that Americans are willing to make a concerted effort to help address it.”

You can make a huge difference in the health of our national parks and help them become “Zero Landfill” like Subaru is by adopting some of these eco-friendly habits:

  • Use a reusable mug, not paper hot cups
  • Use a reusable water bottle, not plastic
  • Don’t bring a plastic bag, try a reusable tote
  • If you bring it in, take it out

For many people, knowing that a car company doesn’t just make great vehicles, but actively contributes good to the world can be a big deal.
